Movie Making

On Friday we started to make some short movies:
We were learning to compose different types of shots.
We were learning to follow a storyboard.
We were learning to collaborate with our group and work in different roles (editor, camera person, actor, director)

It was difficult to work in groups and stick to our separate roles. When we watched our movies back we realised that we need to work on keeping the camera still. We decided we would need to make our expressions more exaggerated so that the audience could understand our story line better. It was difficult to stick to our story board as well and not add in extra shots.

Next we are going to think about different types of films and plan to write our own scripts.

Visiting Author: Adele Broadbent.

Today we had a visit from Adele Broadbent. She is a YA author from Napier. She told us about her inspiration for her most recent book  Between. It is about a character who is fascinated with all things Supernatural. It sounded pretty interesting and we would love to read it one day.

Between

We asked her how she stick to a story without getting bored of what she is writing.
She gave us a great tip:
Choose a character and find something that they want. But don't give it to them straight away. Put a few challenges in front of the character and then end the story with your character getting what they want. That sounds like a great way to plan a narrative which we hope to try out.

She also has a great website where we can visit and search through a whole range of books she has reviewed

2D to 3D

We were learning to to make 3D shapes by creating our own 2D nets. We made the nets by by using wooden 3D shapes. We rolled them over the paper and traced each face.
It was quite challenging because we had figure out if it was going to make the correct shape before we folded it up. We had to make sure we had the correct amount of faces.
when we made cylinders it was hard to figure out how long the long face needed to be.

Enviro 14/6: Ducks

Today for Enviro Kauri and Manuka trudged through the mud to check on the ducks. They are looking healthy but we haven’t seen any eggs yet. Our focus today was to look at their environment and how to make it safe and protected. We are starting to enquire into how to protect them from pests such as; rats, mustelids, dogs and cats, possums, pukeko and eels. If we have any experts in our community we would love to hear from you.

Stella: Te Waka Kaitiaki

Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from Stella Kake-Schmid from Te Waka Kaitiaki Whenua. She gave us a super interesting presentation about how and why we need to be Kaitiaki of our native forests and all that live in it.
Here are some of the interesting things we learnt:
Rats, Mustelids, Cats and Dogs are natives birds biggest predators.

Mustelids (Stoats, Weasels and Ferrets)
Ferrets were introduced to control the rabbit populations. They then became a problem themselves and they now hunt native birds. Humans brought them here and they are just doing the job that they were brought here to do, it is not their fault that they were introduced to our country. Stoats and Weasels can reproduce very fast, they can invade Kiwi burrows and eat eggs and baby kiwi.

Possums
When a possum is born it is the size of a jellybean and stays in it's Mum's pouch for 12 weeks. It stays on it's Mum's back for 7 months. Possums kill our native plants by ring barking them. Possums also eat birds eggs and native berries. Possums were brought to NZ so people could use their fur to make money.

Rats
If the rats don't eat, their teeth could grow to 14 cm in one year. Ship rats have longer tails than their bodies, this can help them to climb trees to access nests. Rats were introduced on boats by Polynesians and Europeans.

Cats and Dogs
Dogs and Cats are the biggest threat to Kiwi and native birds. Kiwi freeze when they are scared and Dogs can crush the Kiwi's neck in one bites.

We need to be Kaitiaki by :
-putting muzzles on dogs
-killing feral cats
-helping to trap pests
-protecting the predator free islands from pests so experts can breed Kiwi
-training your dogs with Kiwi aversion training
-lock your pets up at night
- put bells on cats to warn birds
- never let dogs and cats roam

We were so interested in Stella's korero and hope to see her again soon.
